Vindral joins OpenMOQ Software Consortium

{newsItem.title}

The Swedish live streaming platform Vindral has been a player in the ultra-low latency space since 2015. With focus on future-ready video products, its Vindral Live content-delivery network focuses on ultra-low latency, synchronization and high quality. In the past years, an emerging standard called Media over QUIC (MoQ) has been forming; now as industry leaders are gathering around it, a consortium called OpenMOQ has formed. Vindral is one of the participants involved at an early stage.

Since live streaming is largely still relying on legacy technologies, many companies are calling for a new standard, a modern take on how to achieve a high-quality viewing experience. Current standards all present challenges - from lack of latency control to stability at lower latencies. For this reason, proprietary solutions have been required to fill the gap when ultra-low latency or deterministic latency has been required.

As Media over QUIC is taking shape, it aims to define a modern framework for transmitting media over the Internet. This applies to all parts of the workflow as well as across both VOD and Live. Vindral began adoption of Media over QUIC as early as 2023 and rolled out end-to-end support during 2025.

Late summer 2025, OpenMOQ was introduced; a consortium of companies working together to push the standard forward and provide the industry with open source tools compliant with MoQ. For Vindral, this presents an opportunity to contribute with tools and share knowledge as one of the pioneers in the field.

“We are happy to include Vindral in OpenMOQ, as their focus on low latency and synchronized live streaming fits nicely with MOQ. Their innovative drive will benefit the way we shape our collaboration around this new standard.”, says Will Law, Chief Architect at Akamai - one of the companies behind the initiative.

“While our core products will not be converted to open source, there is a need for an ecosystem of tools, components and know-how that we are both eager to share and learn from others.”, says Per Mafrost, CTO at Vindral.

One of the aims for Vindral is to assist in topics relating to interoperability. One promise of forming a standard is that systems from different vendors are able to cooperate and form a robust network of components.

“Our LiveEngine, the self-hosted way of using Vindral Live, supports Media over QUIC and joining OpenMOQ is one way for us to strengthen its connection to other products that adopt modern streaming standards. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”, Per adds.
