Envipco Appointed Sole Supplier of Bulk-Feed Collection Network for Portugese DRS Operator
Amersfoort, 16 February 2026 – Envipco Holding N.V. (“Envipco” or “the Company”), a leading global provider of recycling systems and Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) technology, has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of bulk-feed collection systems for the Portuguese Deposit Return System (DRS) operator, SDR Portugal.
Agreement Details
According to the agreement, Envipco will deliver and install up to 50 Quantum XL and XXL RVMs for SDR Portugal, with the delivery expected over the next 12-15 months. The contract includes an initial operational phase followed by nine years of service support for the installed systems.
Portugal’s DRS Launch and Objectives
Portugal is set to become the 19th European country to implement a DRS for beverage containers, with the official launch scheduled for 10 April 2026. The system will introduce a deposit value of EUR 0.10 per container, applicable to single-use PET and aluminum containers under three liters. SDR Portugal, a non-profit entity supported by over two dozen companies from the beverage and retail industries, is responsible for operating the DRS. The primary goal of the system is to achieve a 90% collection rate by 2029.
Envipco’s Commitment to the Portuguese DRS
“We are pleased to be selected as the sole supplier of bulk-feed collection to SDR Portugal. Envipco’s Quantum technology, installed and operated in 10 countries, has proven to offer an efficient, powerful complement to in-store container collection in key DRS markets. Envipco is highly dedicated to take active part in Portugal’s commitment towards a circular economy and confident that the network of Quantums across Portugal will provide a cost-efficient and customer-centric collection that will help Portugal reach its collection targets ” says Fons Buurman, CCO Europe and Asia.
A large HORECA Sector drives need for alternative collections
In Portugal, the HORECA (Hotel, Restaurant, and Café) sector accounts for approximately 50% of the country’s beverage container volume. To address the packaging return needs of this sector, SDR Portugal is developing a network of operated collection points in areas with a high concentration of HORECA businesses. These sites will be equipped with high-capacity, bulk-feed RVMs provided by Envipco.
“Given the specific Portuguese context, which differs substantially from other European countries where DRS are already in operation, it was critical to identify a solution capable of supporting container returns in environments with a high density of HORECA establishments, a channel of strategic importance for overall system performance and recovery rates. Bulk-feed options will be key to ensuring widespread coverage for container collection and are scheduled for deployment across 36 Portuguese municipalities. Their ability to collect and count multiple containers per minute makes the process faster and more convenient” says Miguel Mira, Operations Director of SDR Portugal.
